What is Rotary

Founded in 1905, Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary’s people of action have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, we are always working to better our world, and we stay committed to the end.

Rotary members believe that we have a shared responsibility to take action on our world’s most persistent issues. Our 35,000+ clubs in over 200 countries work together to:

  • Promote peace
  • Fight disease
  • Provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene
  • Save mothers and children
  • Support education
  • Grow local economies

Our Mission

We provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

Our motto “Service Above Self ” is something we do every day. It’s in our DNA. It helps to define who we are and what we do.

About the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor

The heart of our club is our members, dedicated people who share a passion for community service and friendship.

Founded in 1974, we are neighbors, friends, and leaders in our community, uniting for the common good.  At the heart of our club are dedicated people who share a passion for community service, friendship and laughter. We share ideas, make plans, hear from the community, and catch up with friends during club programs that fuel the impact we make.

About Our Foundations

Our Foundations promote better understanding, goodwill, and peace through the support of education, improvement of health, and the alleviation of poverty.

With your help, we can make lives better in your community and around the world.

Emerging leaders, economic opportunities, and thriving arts make Gig Harbor and its surrounding communities a better place to live; truly a vibrant and energized neighborhood, shaped through the generosity of giving.

With over $2 million in assets, the Gig Harbor Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts and bequests to the Foundation into scholarships and service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world.

Our Mission
To fund and to support charitable projects within our Rotary club’s areas of service:  Education, Community, Vocational, and Youth.

Our Vision
Strengthening our community by encouraging generosity and connecting people who care with causes that matter.  “Service Above Self.”

Every year, Washington Correction Center for Women in Gig Harbor releases up to 500 offenders, most with 1-2 clothing outfits, a very small cash stipend, and a ride to a bus stop. Virtually none has a job and some are homeless with no place to go. A high percentage will re-offend and come back to prison – some with-in the first year.

In 2013/2014 the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor created the Women’s Prison Program & Scholarship Fund specifically for women being released from the Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW)

The Rotary Club of Gig Harbor Women’s Prison Program & Scholarship Fund offers: Scholarships for

  • Training and resources in successful reentry from prison following release.
  • Education scholarships for women still incarcerated, to pursue correspondence or other training inside the prison.
  • Scholarships for those released and desiring to go back to school—college or trade/professional school.

Women receiving scholarships attend various institutions: University of Washington, Tacoma Community College and numerous community colleges throughout the state, Evergreen State College, Gene Juarez Beauty School and many others. Scholarships do not cover the full cost of education, but to act as an incentive in support of their education.

Where there is illiteracy or dirty water, there is need.

The Floyd and Sandra Olson International Service Foundation was founded in 2006, in honor of Floyd and Sandra Olson. The Foundation supports international projects with an emphasis on sustainable potable water and literacy projects.

Since its inception, the Foundation has raised over $300,000.  The current endowment is over $210,000.  Some $100,000 has been awarded to communities in Peru, Guatemala, Kenya, Philippines, Ethiopia, and other nations with a total project value over $1,000,000.

Our Mission
Reach out to communities, in developing nations, to develop sustainable clean water solutions, education and nutrition.

Our Projects
The Foundation partners with others, obtains matching grants and utilizes contributed services from communities to maximize leverage and to increase commitment to successful projects.  Our approach is that:

1. The community select the project.

2. The community contributes labor and some funds.

3. The community develop a plan to manage and sustain the project
